Counselling, Life Skills, and Wellness Coaching Centre:

The Counselling, Life Skills and Wellness Coaching Centre caters to the needs of the students at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The students receive counseling and coaching to address their academic and personal needs. Mr.Gururaja Rao.B, the Director, Counselling, Life Skills and Wellness Coach of NMIT offers coaching to the students based on the students' needs and requirements. Periodic motivational talks address general and individual student needs in one-on-one and group coaching. Psychosocial support is offered to the students in distress. Issues that impede learning, such as behavioral and relationship problems, are addressed. Utmost confidentiality is maintained for student's identity and the nature of their problems. Regular monitoring of student's performance and behavior, is conducted by faculty members, departmental mentors, and the Life Skills and Wellness Coach. In addition, periodic parent meetings are conducted. Parental intervention, support and guidance are sought to handle the challenges. Faculty members are further involved in the informal system of mentoring. The coaching centre aims to make the Engineering students self-confident, self-reliant, employable and committed to the cause. Moreover, as per the need, further assistance is referred to Referral Hospitals with information to the Parents.

The strategies applied for guiding students at NMIT during counseling and coaching sessions include:

  • Creating a positive initial impression to instill confidence and assure students that all information shared will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
  • Establishing a connection in the first session by demonstrating empathy and offering reassurance to the students.
  • Removing obstacles to effective communication, such as avoiding negative attitudes, active listening skills, and encouraging students to freely express their concerns or questions, while steering clear of being judgmental or impatient.
  • Employing "active listening" techniques with students, encompassing acknowledgment, confirmation, and seeking clarification to gain a deeper understanding of their perspectives.
  • Straightforwardly conveying information, supported by visual aids designed to stimulate proactive engagement.
  • Formulating open-ended, pertinent, and impactful questions to enhance comprehension and provide clarification.
  • Identifying and seizing on opportune moments for teaching and learning that arise during counseling or coaching sessions.
  • Equipping students with training in soft skills to enhance their employability and overall readiness for the professional arena.
