Innovative methods of Teaching and Learning

Field Visit Field visits are provided for courses with application-oriented content. The objective is to give students an actual insight into the processes involved, helping them visualize and understand theoretical concepts alongside the practical challenges faced in the field. Students also learn about the latest tools and techniques used in the industry, which helps them develop skills in high-demand areas and become industry-ready.
Technical Talk Technical talks are organized for courses with conceptual content to spark interest and deepen understanding of the concepts through insights from industry experts.
Exhibition Visit The department organizes visits to various prestigious exhibitions for students to become familiar with the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
Technical hands-on training Technical hands-on training is provided to students to prepare them for the industry.
Demonstration through Physical Models For subjects such as Building Planning and Drawing, Building Materials, Design of RCC Structures, and Elements of Civil Engineering, the demonstrative method using typical models and materials is one of the best practices and is widely used by course instructors.
Demonstration through Software Analysis Course instructors use software components to support the theoretical explanations of courses such as Structural Analysis I and II, Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, and Construction Management. Software tools like STAAD.pro, ETABS, and Primavera are utilized for this purpose.
Flipped Classes
Self-Study Component Self-study of advanced or recent topics is assigned to students. To assist with this, video links related to the syllabus content are included in the syllabus itself. Most of these video lectures are sourced from NPTEL.
Usage of ICT Tools To make the teaching and learning process more interactive, professors use several ICT tools to deliver lectures. The department is equipped with ICT tools such as smart boards, I Scribe, and LED projectors.
Survey Camp Survey Camp is an integral part of the curriculum at the Department of Civil Engineering, NMIT. It provides students with lifelong learning experiences by helping them understand field concepts and challenges. The camp also imparts teamwork, communication, and professional ethics skills to every student.
Case Studies
Publication of Research Work The department consistently motivates and supports students in publishing their work in the form of paper publications. This encourages healthy competition among students and enhances their critical thinking skills, leading to higher-quality research.
MOOC Course as learning assignment To excel in latest tools and technology, learning assignment based on MOOC courses is assigned to students so that student can get additional knowledge and certification to accelerate their industry readiness and improve placement.
Online Laboratory (innovative method used during online classes) To overcome the disruption due to Covid, along with theory online classes, online laboratory demonstration was organized. Under this activity students have come up with very innovation and excellent presentation to elaborate their understanding of the experiments.
Context Setting Classes for Laboratory Classes During COVID-19, while IT laboratories were conducted online, the department seized the opportunity to promote self-learning through context-setting online classes. Students from the Civil Engineering Department were assigned experiments to be conducted virtually. Each group was required to:
1. Register on the BIS website, download the relevant code of practice, and read the code book.
2. Prepare the procedure for the experiment.
3. Download YouTube videos related to the experiment.
4. Create and deliver an online presentation.
This approach helped students become more independent in conducting experiments.
