About us:

The Department of Civil Engineering at NMIT is one of theCore Engineering Departments, growing in leaps and bounds in both academics and research fields. It is grooming the budding engineers to the ever challenging requirements of the field.The department is imparting quality education to meet the technological and industrialadvancement. The accomplishments of the Department are highlighted as follows>

• 2009 – The Department was established– an Autonomous UG Program in Civil Engineering started with an intake of 60.
• Recognized as a Research Centre from Visvesvaraya Technological University
• 2013 – Intake is increased to 120
• PG – M.Tech in Structural Engineering Programme started with intake of 24.
• VTU Recognized Research Centre for M.Sc.Engg. by research and PhDProgramme.
• 2015 – Permanent affiliation under VTU.
• 2016 – PG Programme obtained its Autonomous Status under VTU.
• 2017 – UG Programme was accredited by NBA under Tier-1 for 3 Years till 2020.
• 2020 – NBA accreditation is renewed up to 2023.
• The department imparts an Outcome Based Education [OBE] and modifies the syllabus once n three years/need based in line with industry requirements.
• Internship/Visits to Industry/Research Centre/Hands-on practices are mandatory requirement of the curriculum.
• Signed MoUs with reputed industries and Research Institutes for Internship,industry based live project works and technical trainings.
• MOOC/NPTEL Courses are a mandatory part of curriculum.

BOS (Board of Studies) – 2018 - 2020

The various fields of Civil Engineering under the Department, namely Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation and Highway Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resource Engineering, Environmental Engineering,, Geology etc. are well designed integrating theoretical concept with hands-on practices as Laboratories relevant to few courses.

Basic Material Testing laboratory

The Material Testing laboratory is equipped with Universal Testing Machine (100T capacity), Compression Testing Machine, Hardness Testing Machines and Impact Testing Machines to cater to the requirement of curriculum. The laboratories are also used for testing and consultancy - quality control measures of Civil Engineering Materials.>

CAD Laboratory

The CAD laboratory of the Dept. of Civil Engineering., has been equipped with 42 nos. desktop computers, Laser Printers, LCD Projectors, Internet and LAN Connection, multi-user licenses for software such as AutoCAD, ETABS, ANSYS and STAAD Pro. Students use this software for the design and analysis of structures. The lab also has UPS - 10KVA+ 20 batteries facility.>

Concrete and Highway Laboratory

The Concrete and Highway laboratory has compression testing machines, flow test tables, slump test equipment, abrasion testing machines, Marshall Stability test equipment, Vicat apparatus and much more. Students use this laboratory for quality control testing of concrete and highway materials which are used in the construction industry.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

The Geotechnical Engineering laboratory is equipped with triaxial testing equipment, direct shear test equipment, vane shear test equipment, CBR test equipment, compaction test equipment, core cutters, sieves, permeability test apparatus and other equipment. Students use this laboratory to study the fundamental properties of soil to assess parameters such as the safe bearing capacity of soil and CBR values pertaining to strengthening of the soil.

Hydraulic and Machineries Laboratory

The purpose of this laboratory is to reinforce and enhance the understanding of the fundamentals of Fluid mechanics and Hydraulic machines. The experiments here are designed to demonstrate the applications of the basic fluid mechanics principles and to provide a more intuitive and physical understanding of the theory. This laboratory exercise provides practical knowledge in measuring pressure, discharge and velocity of fluid flow in channels and pipes. Also the conversion of hydraulic energy possessed by the water in running turbines and the use of pumps to increase the hydraulic energy of water.>

Structures Laboratory

Structural engineering laboratory present in the Department of civil Engineering is equipped with Loading Frame having 200ton capacity. Load frames are used for a variety of static and dynamic testing applications.

Process of Teaching & Learning

The Course Coordinators are adopting some of the following delivery methods in addition to regular class room teaching.>

• Presentation by student groups
• Task oriented discussion by small groups
• Crossword puzzles
• Use of exhibits and displays by Course Coordinators
• Supervised study during class period
• Use of case studies
• Self-Learning through facilitator
• ICT –Information Communication Tools – YouTube Videos, web links, NPTEL course materials, etc. relevant to the topic are provided to the students.

During the classroom interaction with students, it is encouraged to use collaborative learning. Some of the concepts are explained through case studies and real world examples. The following methods are also adopted.>

Context Based Learning –Context based teaching enables the students to learn from experience. Real life relevant events(daily newspapers) are chosen for analysis; the place, time, background and reasons for its occurrence are noted. The students are taught the art of analysis, predict possibilities and design suitable advance actions. Examples are supported by site visit, whenever possible.>

Peer Teaching - In peer teaching, a specific topic is assigned to each student (individually or in teams) for presentation to a small group of students or to the entire class. The Course Coordinators establish minimum requirements or guidelines for the presentation and include a couple of examples. The presentation must include reference web pages, videos if available, case studies, etc., as suggested by the instructor.>

Quality of laboratory experiments with regard to conducting experiments, recording observations, analysis of data etc>

The core courses of the programme are supported by laboratory component (Ref Fig 2.3), through which students are provided an opportunity for delegated hands on training. The learners’ ability is continuously assessed during regular laboratory class, with emphasis on conducting the experiment, recording of data, analysis of results and inference. Their level of understanding is evaluated through viva-voce. The performance of students is evaluated once in a semester through MSE – Mid Semester Examination internally, by Course Co-ordinators and through SEE – Semester End Examination, jointly by internal and external examiners (as co-examiner).>

Encouraging bright students>

• Good performers have the opportunity to complete the programme in advance (in 3 and a half years) and take up Project Work or Internship in Industries /reputed Universities abroad.
• Students are also encouraged to participate in paper presentation, publications and to take up competitive examinations such as KPSC, GATE, GRE, TOEFL etc.
• Students have the option of participating in research activities in the Centres of Excellence.
• Students are facilitated with software training classes.

Assisting weak student>

• From the analysis of results of first MSE-Mid Semester Examinations, poor performers (students with marks less than 15) are identified and they are provided with individual attention through remedial/tutorial classes. Improvement in their performance is recorded.
• Students who are lacking communication skills (oral and/or writing) are identified (through regular interaction during classes) and are provided with special English coaching in Language laboratory classes
• Assistance and regular tracking of performance through mentors – Mentors identify poor performers in their group of mentees, monitor their attendance, counsel them, interact with parents, and motivate them.
• Academically weak students who are keen and good in other activities (co and extracurricular activities and sports) are encouraged to continue to perform well in their field of interest, without neglecting the academic responsibilities. The academic performance is monitored and analyzed regularly.

Quality of Semester End Examination, internal semester question papers, assignments and evaluation>

The system of evaluating the learners’ performance through Mid Semester Examination (MSE1, II, III), Learning Assignments 1, 2 (LA1, LA2) and Semester End Examinations (SEE) is explained under Semester End Examinations and Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) separately. As an Autonomous Institution, the SEE evaluation is made transparent by involving External Examiners from other institutions as members of Panel of Examiners (PoE), controlled /monitored by Board of Examiners (BoE) for Question paper setting, practical exams and evaluation of answer scripts. The entire system of Examination and evaluation is controlled and monitored by Controller of Examinations. Roles and Responsibilities of various members of examination system under Autonomous system are described under criteria 10.>

Semester End Examination>

The process involved in Semester End Examination is as follows.>

Question paper setting>

• Academic Calendar (Fig. 2.7) consists of notification of Semester End Examination (SEE) schedule.
• A copy of list of subjects of both Odd and Even semesters duly signed by Head of the Department is submitted to the DUGC panel and to the Autonomous offic
• SEE Coordinator communicates with members of Panel of Examiners (PoE) to take their consen t / know their willingness to set the question paper (QP).
• An Appointment Order duly signed by Chairman, BoE, for setting SEE question paper, preparing scheme of evaluation and solution will be dispatched in a sealed cover along with curriculum of subject, model of QP, templates for QP and solution and a remuneration form with a due date for submitting the QP.
• Three question papers and corresponding scheme of evaluation and solution; one from Course coordinators and two from external members of PoE are set on each Course as per the standard procedure established in Autonomous system, adhering strictly to the confidentiality.
• QPs received from the members of PoE are stacked in a sealed Almira till the meeting of BoE, conducted as per the schedule.

BoE Meeting>

• Sealed covers of question papers are opened during BoE meeting in the presence of External BOE member, scrutinized thoroughly for quality and to see that the questions are set well with in the syllabus, mapping to CO’s and Bloom levels and also to make the question paper error free. QP with any major deviation will be rejected.
• Questions and corresponding scheme and solutions from all the three question papers are mixed /blended unit wise, selecting questions from different question papers for transparency.
• QPs along with a scheme of evaluation and solution in sealed covers are submitted to the Controller of Examination (CoE) for further process.

Typing of QP and releasing it during examination>

• Typing of question papers from manuscripts is under the supervision of Controller of Examination (CoE)
• Proof reading of question papers to make it free from errors is carried out by one of the internal BoE members assigned by the BoE chairman
• All the QPs (3) are printed and sealed in a Blind envelope. Finally, only one question paper will be picked randomly by CoE / Dean academic and released for the examination.

Quality in CIE>

Step-wise procedure as indicated below is followed:>

• Preparation of a time table for MSE I, II and III, adhering to the schedule of Academic Calenda
• Preparation of MSE question papers as per the standard format (which includes Blooms Level- BL and COs), submission of QP and Scheme of Evaluation to CIE Coordinator well in advance for smooth conduct of MSEs
• Scrutiny of Question papers and schemes for quality by DUGC
• Evaluation of Blue Books as per scheme of evaluation
• Scheme of valuation are announced, answer books are given to the students for redresses of their grievances on evaluation
• Marks are entered into Gurukul before the set due date for entry of marks.
• Conduct of Learning Assignments (LA) - LA1 and LA2, their evaluation, and entry of marks in Gurukul.
• Dispatching students' report to parents
• CIE report (Student Ledger) is generated from Gurukul. Student ledger duly signed by student, Course Coordinator and HOD; it is submitted to Autonomous office prior to SEE Examination.

Scheme of CIE and SEE>

• To improve the quality of question papers, faculty members prepare the question papers mapping each questions to Course Outcomes (COs) and Bloom’s Taxonomy Level (BL).
• Question paper of Semester End Examination (SEE) is set and evaluated for 100 Marks and later is reduced to 50 marks
• Continuous Internal Evaluation is set for 50 marks, which includes 30marks from best two of MSE I, II and III, 10 marks from surprise tests and 10 marks from assignments i.e., 50% of the weightage in each subject will be given to continuous Internal evaluation during the term work in the form of tests (MSEs), assignments, surprise tests, projects, hands-on experiments, seminars, discussions etc.
• As an Autonomous Institution, the SEE evaluation is made transparent by involving member of PoE as External Examiners / Evaluators from other institutions for Question paper setting, practical exams & evaluation of answer scripts.

Innovation

Several innovative projects are executed in the department. These projects pertain to the alternative building materials, safe guarding the environment from waste materials and use of geo-polymers.>

Under the subject of alternative building materials, work is carried out in the following areas: utilization of fly ash, GGBS, Iron ore tailings, copper ore tailings, stone dust, and coir fibres. These are employed for producing low cost building materials without any compromise on specifications or sacrifice of quality and fundamental properties of material.>

A new area in the direction of geo polymer concrete is under consideration for investigations. In this area, the fundamental properties of materials are studied and an attempt is made to produce the construction materials for different compressive strengths. This will help in reducing the emission of carbon-di-oxide lowering the environmental impact of cement industries.>

Also, an attempt is made to utilize solid waste in the production of construction materials and to safe guard the environment from solid waste disposal to some extent. Here the solid waste is used to produce table tops, small beams, bricks, with some binder material. It is cost effective and durable and can be used as a wood substitute.>

DEPARTMENTAL FORUM:SURVEKSHAN

The Deapartment Forum is named as SuveKshan – Surva+Veekshana meaning “Be Vigilant Always” an ever demanding attribute of any Civil Engineer. The forum conducts annual Techno-cultural fest at the Campus hosting various events and conducting national level competitions providing future civil engineers showcase their capabilities, giving shape to their imagination and creativity which demands to use their technical skill sets also. The Project and Poster exhibition is a practice adopted to evaluate students’ research contributions through their project work by a team of Juries invited from Industry.>

Eventunder Annual Techno-Cultural Fest:SurveKshan

Dr.Prof.N. R. Shetty, Advisor,BR Kumarswamy, Chief Environmental Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board was the guest of honor of the inaugural function of SurveKshan 2019-2020. The event was successfully conducted on 14 th and 15 th of November 2019. Events include Egg Drop, Model Making, Bridge Making, Debate, Quiz completion etc.>

Invited as speaker: Mr. Santhosh L G, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Civil Engineering, NMIT, was invited as one of the resource persons along with other eminent fellows for the Five Days “QIP Short term program on Advances in Geo-environmental Engineering” during 27-31 Mar 2017. The program was organized by the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and coordinated by Dr Sivakumar Babu G L, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Chairman of CCE, IISc. Mr. Santhosh L G delivered a lecture on the subject : Landfill designs and evaluation of landfill containment system using numerical models.
