The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 2002 with an intake of 60 students. The intake was increased to 120 for the academic year 2009-10 and further increased to 180 during the academic year 2012-13.

Research & Development

Research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is nurtured through various academic activities, training programs and sponsored programs funded by national organizations and the industry.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The department hosts a diverse and talented mix of students, technical staff and faculty members. With over 700 students (undergraduate and post graduate) and 40+ faculty members, the department has built a reputation for outstanding teaching and has nurtured a strong research program.

The department houses excellent experimental and computational facilities. The faculty has several areas of interest and they include thermal engineering, design engineering and fluid mechanics, heat transfer, IC engines, alternative fuels, computation fluid dynamics, finite elements methods, fracture mechanics, design optimization and vibrations. Extensive collaborations exist both within and across departments. Faculty members are engaged in active research with partners from R&D establishments and industry.

There are exclusive infrastructure facilities in the department to carry out R&D work. It includes laboratories for Machine Design, the Manufacturing Engineering and Computation Fluid Mechanics. Post-graduate programs are offered in two streams namely, Design Engineering and Thermal Engineering. Over 50 elective courses are offered to the graduate and post-graduate students.
