The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 2002 with an intake of 60 students. The intake was increased to 120 for the academic year 2009-10 and further increased to 180 during the academic year 2012-13.

Students have opportunities to investigate a broad range of research areas. Some of these are Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Methods, Centrifugal casting, Stir Casting, Robotics, Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing.
Much of the research is conducted within the department and some projects are carried out in collaboration with other departments and R&D institutions. The faculty and students have published many research publications in leading National and International journals and conferences. Some of our faculty are Fellows of various National Academies in Science and Engineering and have received recognition in the form of National and International awards.
The Department is well equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructural facilities. Funding is available for projects from agencies such as IEDC, DRDO, VTU and Public / Private industries. Faculty members also render assistance to industries in the form of technical advice and consultancy services.
