Typically, visual servoing techniques can be categorized into image based visual servoing and position-based visual servoing. A position-based visual servo strategy consists of three distinct phases: target recognition, target pose estimation and controller calculations.

Image based Visual Servoing is based on the error between current and desired features on the image plane and does not involve any estimate of the pose of the target. The features may be the coordinates of visual features, lines or moments of regions. The Unicycle based Robotic system used here consists of Camera and Ultrasonic sensors for extracting the image features and range respectively. A suitable motion Image based Visual Servoing controller is developed which commands the wheel velocities based on feedback from computer vision module to achieve the smooth and efficient travel path towardsthe object of interest. In this regard, an autonomous vehicle having the capability of recognizing and tracking the particular object can be used for many of the potential applications.

Establishment of Centre for Robotics Research to Promote Multidisciplinary Research in Engineering Education

Technology Demonstrations

Humanoid Head - Humanoid Robotic Head (Advanced Robot for Interactive Applications, ARIA) indigenously designed and developed in the Centre for Robotics Research, NMIT and the technical detail describing how the robot would respond to various activities by coordinating the movement of each part in order to mimic the various facial expressions and head movements. Various Dynamixel motors of RX, AX series are incorporated for head movement (roll, pitch, yaw and Jaw) and micro servo motors are incorporated for different eye, eyebrow and eyelash movements which are related to actions like sad, surprise, anger, etc.

Currently 2nd Gen Robot is in the final phase of Fabrication.

Humanoid Robot Teaching Child with Autism

The proposed work under VGST (CESEM Award) ongoing project where a Humanoid Robot Diya will teach a child with Autism. The robot is capable of recognizing characters and numerals and compute simple equations.
