About the Program

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started a Ph.D. Programme under VTU in the year 2008. The department of Computer Science and Engineering started a Ph.D. Programme under the University of Mysore in the year 2010. The Institute provides facilities for research leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The Ph.D. degree is awarded based on the satisfactory performance of a registered candidate in the prescribed course work, comprehensive viva, seminar, the thesis submitted by the candidate, and a final viva voce. The Ph.D. programmes in Computer Science and Engineering imparts the knowledge, skills, and attitude to do world-class research in the area of computer science. Doctorate students are expected to publish their work in leading international journals and conferences about their area of research. Research programmes leading to M.S/Ph.D. degrees are the main thrust in the institute. These programmes attract students from all corners of the country, in addition to some international students.

Research programmes have a limited amount of course work, essentially to prepare the student to carry out research, and to develop adequate breadth in the subject area. The main emphasis is on the research work leading to a thesis. This involves delving in-depth into a research topic and includes grasping, evaluating and refining ideas, mathematical rigor, problem formulation, literature survey, implementation (programming), and performance evaluation.

The Department has produced 13 Ph.D. scholars so far. Currently, 14 Research scholars are pursuing their research work leading to their Ph.D. degree in the Research Centers.
