Aeronautical Engineering is taken as one of the most fascinating subjects in applied science and engineering around the Globe. On the other hand, the improvement of our nation can happen if we develop aerospace technology, which will facilitate for other technologies update proportionally. Aerospace engineers incubate new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and Aerospace exploration, often specializing in areas such as aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, aerospace structures, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods.
The Department offers a vibrant academic atmosphere which enables independent research and free exchange of ideas. The department has continuous interaction with R & D organizations of international reputation in the field of aerospace engineering that lead to mutually beneficial research activities.
The department of Aeronautical Engineering was established in 2011-12 with an intake of 60 with appropriate approval of AICTE, New Delhi and VTU(Visvesvaraya Technological University). Besides, there are an additional 10% seats (2019 onwards) under lateral entry scheme. The intake is increased to 120 from the Academic year 2020-21. The department has grown rapidly ever since its establishment. The department started M Tech program in Aerospace Engineering with an intake of 18 from the academic year 2019 and proposed to open a Research Centre under VTU (Visvesvaraya TechnologicalUniversity) from the academic year 2020 onwards. The goal of the department is to mentor the students into top class aeronautical engineers, suitable for employment in the National and International scenarios and almost catering successful engineers into various aerospace organizations continuously.
The department has faculty members with good experience who are well qualified holding Ph.D. and M.Tech. qualifications in Aerospace Engineering from premier institutions of India and abroad. They have rich experience in aerodynamics, aircraft design, propulsion systems, aircraft structural analysis and space engineering and have acquired the competency from their previous tenures in industries, academic institutions and R&D organizations. The Department currently has 16 faculty members, including six doctorates and three pursuing Doctorate.
The department activities are highly supported by eminent personalities from industries, government organizations and R&D Sectors to provide the students about the Professional Awareness with the outside Environment. It is continuously acquired through resources who build up a good academic environment for the students.
The Department arranges Internship and Project works at National and International label organizations such as NDSU, USA, Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and private organizationlike Tata Advance System, Mahendra Aerospace etc. around the year.
It also includes educational visits to Air Force Bases, Industry and Academic Institutions supported by ‘Flight Training Program’ at IIT Kanpur are some unique opportunities providedby the Department. The Department conducts workshops and guest lectures regularly by the experts from industry/academic institutions supported by its Center of Excellence (CoE) in Aerospace.
On employment scenario, Aeronautical Engineer has enormous opportunity in the Ministry of Defence laboratories such as DRDO, ADE in Bangalore,ISRO, aircraft and helicopter manufacturing public sector undertakings. Students are also provided with opportunities in private companies like Mahindra Aerospace, Acumen Aviation and companies engaged in design and maintenance. Also, our students have shown their brilliant presence in higher studies, either in reputed institutions like IITs through GATE examination or in international institutions in countries like USA, Germany, Italy, UK, Canada, Australia etc.
