Development of thermal Barrier coating for an Alumnium alloy/Cast iron engine cylinder

Thermal barrier coatings are becoming increasingly important in providing thermal insulation for heat engine components. Thermal insulation reduces in-cylinder heat transfer from the engine combustion chamber as well a component structural temperature.

Containment of heat also contributes to increase in-cylinder work and offers high exhaust temperature for energy recovery. Advanced ceramic coatings also lead to reduction in friction and wear of parts. Cylinder liner is an important part of the internal combustion engine.

In baseline, the liner undergoes a severe wear at high temperatures of combustion which results in seizure of the liner. Due to heat losses through the cylinder walls, the thermal efficiency of the engine will be low. To increase wear resistance and thermal efficiency of the engine, a thermal barrier will be coated to the inner cylinder walls by replacing its conventional liner.

In this project, I am going to develop a thermal barrier coating for Alumnium alloy/Cast iron diesel engine cylinder.

The main objectives of the project are:

  Developing of materials
Testing of TBC(Mechanical and Thermal properties)
Analysis of engine cylinder with and without TBC using Ansys FE software
  Result analysis
