EFFECT OF INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING PROCESS ON PROPERTIES OF MATERIAL USED IN DIESEL ENGINE

Intend to pursue research work on effect of different manufacturing process on properties of cast iron material like mechanical property, Tribological property through metallography and mach inability, used in diesel engines.

To under stand the factors that control micro structure, wear and machinability of flake graphite iron and Spheriodal graphite iron of same grade and same composition with different manufacturing methods/approaches

Different test setup were developed to carry out the research work

Metallography test – Microscope with image grabber
  Wear resistance test -  Tribometer
Machinability test – Lathe, cabide tool and tool Dynamometer
ARM Processor Based System Development Board
  Edwin PCB design tool

Preliminary Experimental work on the above has been conducted and study is made on many aspects like metallographic wear pattern and Machinability. The results are encouraging.

Few experimental results of FG 260, Normal cooling process & FG 260 Rapid cooling process are as shown below.

I. Microstructure.

II. Wear Properties

Comparison of Frictional force between FG260 Normal Cooling & Rapid Cooling

Comparison of Wear force between FG260 Normal Cooling & Rapid Cooling

Industries who are supplying cast components made of FG iron and SG iron of different grade to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) have agreed to lend their support by providing the necessary material to carry out the research work.

I have registered for PhD at NITK surathkal during 2008-09. Preliminary requirements of PhD program like four course work in IST and IInd semester. I have completed Istsem course work and IInd sem course work will be completing by april-2009.
