Nanoscience and MEMS is an emerging field of research today. In this field, a 5-day National workshop on “Nanomaterials and Micro Systems” was organized at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore, in July 2014. The workshop was inaugurated by Padma Bhushan Prof. Dr. V. K. Aatre. Over 100 delegates from Karnataka and neighbouring states attended the workshop.
The workshop was designed to give the participant an overview of nanomaterials and MEMS fabrication & application. The speakers included eminent scientists from educational institutions and industries such as IISc, CMTI, SITAR, NAL and DRDO labs. The lectures covered a wide array of subjects such as shape memory alloys, MEMS packaging, applications of polymer nanocomposites, MEMS fabrication, electrochromic devices, piezoelectric devices and others. Hands on tutorials on MEMS design using Comsol and demos on thin film fabrication using a PVD, CVD and solgel technology were the star attractions of the workshop.
Visits were organized to the Center of Nanoscience and Engineering Department of IISC and to the Nano-fabrication and characterization facility at CMTI. The workshop ended with a discussion on a collaborative setup for research between NMIT and other participating institutes who were at the workshop.
